The story began in 1984 when TED was founded, sponsored by the Sapling Foundation. TED is a non-profit organization with the goal to gather people who are interested in the topics of Technology, Entertainment, and Design. Their slogan is “Ideas Worth Spreading”. Through hard work and dedication the first annual TED conference was held in Monterey, California in 1990.
Throughout the years, the idea of TED expanded and continued to grow, offering people all over the world an opportunity to participate in the annual conferences as speakers. Each speaker is given the opportunity to spread their idea through an 18 minute talk under the umbrella’s of the main TED topics – Technology, Entertainment, and Design.
As a result of the roaring success of TED, thoughts on establishing TEDx, as a local independently organized TED event began. After TED approved the establishment of TEDx, and administered licenses to aid the spreading of the TED message, independent TEDx organizations sprung throughout the world. TEDx allowed individuals to live and fully experience the world of TED in their local communities.
TEDx, x = independently organized event. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading,TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
TEDx was also spread to Egypt, and multiple organizations were created in different Egyptian cities. Among the Egyptian TEDx organizations is TEDxYouth@Alexandria, which got its license in 2011. They held an event under the theme “YOU”th Lead. It was very convenient during the year 2011, for it shed a light of importance on how crucial it is for the youth of Alexandria to start taking an initiative towards raising the community to higher levels. Dr. Fadel Soliman was one of the speakers during the 2011 event. In 2012, the main theme was “Fekr” and it was mainly dedicated towards generating and sharing ideas that create our community and can help motivate the youth. Last year, the 2013 event was under the theme Superheroes. The event took place after many hardships in the community, and the theme was dedicated to generating out hope and shedding light on “hidden heroes” within ourselves and within the community.
This year, the annual TEDxYouth@Alexandria event will be focused around the theme SPECTRUM. A spectrum is a band of colors, as seen in a rainbow.. The reason behind the choice of this year’s theme is the many differences that join together to make our society. The color white splits into seven different colors, just as how the seven different colors join together to create one color. Through our differences we are create who we are as individuals, but that only leaves us with one color on the spectrum. Our differences come in many situations like our backgrounds in science, psychology, philosophy, medicine, and many other topics. Each and every one of us has a vision – a personal spectrum – regarding everything that we see, but at the end of the day, like all of the different colors, we complete each other. To achieve and maintain that final, full spectrum, image we have to have all of its components – the good and the bad. To gain this, the main step is to accept others and our differences.
Join TEDxYouth@Alexandria for the 4th annual event, which will be held at the Great Hall at Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
